Type 1: Location and assessment survey This is a visual inspection only and presumes unidentified materials to be asbestos and requires them to be managed accordingly. Type 2: Standard sampling, identification and assessment survey This survey is undertaken on the same basis as a Type 1 survey except that samples are collected and analysed for the presence of asbestos. This greatly reduces the need to manage "innocent" materials as asbestos. Type 3: Full access This type of survey is used to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, all asbestos products by opening up the structure and analysing all suspect materials prior to demolition or major refurbishment/alterations to a building.
